A Nod To A Writer I've Never Met

I never met a 98 year-old man by the name of George Whitman before, but was rather inspired by the obituary The New York Times wrote in honor of him. That being said, as I will now not have the opportunity to shake his hands, I did have the chance of visiting his bookstore, Shakespeare & Company, that is situated right on the Left Bank in Paris. If the walls of this solitary book haven could talk, I'm sure it would be a classic novel in itself. Having been a familiar stop amongst literary mavens such as Hemingway and James Joyce, Whitman's Shakespeare & Company also offered refuge for traveling novelists and visiting poets.

Beyond all the stories of who laid footsteps in his bookstore, what fascinates me the most is his own personal story. Whitman was born in East Orange, N.J. and grew up in Salem, Massachusetts. His father's career often meant much traveling for Whitman and his family. Eventually, he went to Boston University and majored in journalism. After graduating, he continued to explore the world and write. His studies didn't stop there as he enrolled in Harvard, but had to change his plans once he enlisted in the army in 1941.

Whitman served until the end of WWII and despite that abrupt change of pace for his life, his journey exploring didn't. He finally settled in Paris and used his G.I Bill to start a small lending company in a hotel near the honorary Sorbonne. The rest is literary history.

Even as the humble beginnings of Shakespeare & Company eventually earned famed company to walk through its doors, it seems to have held onto such a quaint and placid vibe surrounding it.

My first recollection of any magical association to a bookstore was my childhood replays of Belle singing through the villages in Beauty and the Beast. She loved that one book in that one bookshelf in what seemed as the only bookstore around. So when I finally lived in Paris for a month about 3 years ago, the travel books recommended a visit to Shakespeare & Company. The shelves were filled from top to bottom with racks of books that I've never heard of, but wanted so bad to.

I did recall reading the walls that posted sayings such as "Be not inhospitable to strangers, lest they be angels in disguise" by Irish poet W.B. Yeats.

I enjoy that quote even though I might disagree with some of the stances Yeats held as an Irish public figure. I digress.

This is about a notable bookstore that came about by a man's quest for a journey and the ability to write about it. Who am I to point fingers at our human condition and the things we've said and done in the past. And that was rightfully expressed with the lifestyle of this 98 year-old man I've never met. They say he lived at the apartment right above the store. In a very odd recollection for my own sake, maybe he was hanging out in his Euro flat, sipping some earl green tea, thinking about the Jets or days gone by, all the while, a young writer from Queens stood in awe of his creation.

This is why I do it.

Candid moments when an artist allows us to dive into the essence of their affair with music. But the point that seals the deal is when actual substance and talent coincide with their overall presentation.

Coming from a perspective as one who enjoys creating poetry, and more importantly the message behind it, I understand the vitality of the "craft." Words not to be spoken just because they can, but rather because there is meaning. I suppose it's a mutual understanding as artists. Which is why respect is given when due.

Meet, or for followers of his beginnings since '08, be reintroduced to Jesse Boykins III.

We could sit here and discuss his accolades and his Soul Train Music Award Nomination, but that's another post. *crossing fingers*

I recommend taking a look see at this 3 piece film Reebok covered that highlights the process behind this indie soul artist and his craft. (Didn't even know Reebok jumped on the music train like that) but hey, sure glad they did. Enjoy.

Mash It Up: "De La Soulviet" x TenDJiz

Da Vinci had The Sistine Chapel. Dostoevsky had The Brothers Karamazov. Einstein had revolutionary theory. The success of such ingenious creators of intelligent masterpieces are sometimes gauged upon that one particular piece or creation. As for producer/sound engineer, DJ Tengiz, his take on matching interesting sound bites from Russia to the masses of hip-hop and beyond are as revolutionary as Tsereteli himself.

On the surface, De La Soulviet itself can come across as just another remix refreshing the hits of the hip-hop pioneer group De La Soul by some self-proclaimed producer who sits at home with their digital audio workstation. But what you might not know is that DJ Tengiz brings to the plate an opportunity to hear how incorporating Soviet jazz and soul music to a hip-hop sound sees no borders . The M Report got to know more about the mastermind and his latest release De La Soulviet. Watch out Neptunes and Swizzy, Russia’s got a brand new bag.

I sort of have this Wizard of Oz -type perception about you. Like the mind behind the magic of the production that goes on at Tengiz Recordz is this mysterious force without a trace: not many personal pictures or blasting of information on Twitter, etc. So tell us about yourself.

Thank you! Originally I'm from Saint-Petersburg, Russia. In the '90s I produced a huge hip-hop hit for the artist Mister Maloy. It was something like the "Nuthin' but a G Thang" joint for Russia. The project sold over 1 million copies. It was the first Russian rap song which got airtime on TV and FM stations. After that, I worked as a producer and sound engineer for hip-hop artists that have won top awards at Russian MTV Music Awards. Altogether I've produced hundreds of beats and mixed several thousand songs. In the beginning of 2010, I moved to Miami and launched my own record company.

How does your studio impact Miami’s music scene?

When it comes to music from Miami, the big names are Rick Ross, Pitbull and Flo Rida. But there is much more to the South Florida scene than the trap-rap bangers or dance hip-hop. These days, there have been a lot of new artists that represent "The New Miami movement". The sound those musicians provide to the people is different from Miami mainstream hip-hop. They are known for their smooth stylings and soulful beats.

During the last year, I recorded and mixed about 10 albums for the artists who represent the New Miami movement such as Vurn, YNG, Streets Buchanon, Shanetane to name a few.

Let’s talk about your roster of clientele. You have artists who have done shows with mainstream artists like Wiz Khalifa to artists who are more on an international platform. They seem to make waves in their own respected industries. Is there a pre-requisite in order to get your attention or studio time?

I have a great deal of experience with many music genres. I've made music for video games, TV commercials, etc. I'm happy to work with new artists because everyone is unique and I learn something new every time. Also I've been looking for that artist with whom I can build a full project with. I've been searching through Miami music blogs and twitters for interesting MCs and groups.

Your first produced album was entitled “Soulviet Beats.” What was the inspiration behind this mix and was it after your first production that you decided “De La Soulviet” would be born?

De La Soul is the group that inspired me to become a hip-hop producer. I used to listen to "3 Feet High and Rising" and "De La Soul is Dead" and dug through soviet vinyl for the similar grooves. Since then I've been collecting USSR music soul/jazz/funk samples. When I moved to Miami, I got an idea to combine American hip-hop and Soviet soul. I began to work on the project about half a year ago. During this process I've created around 30 beats. I've chosen only 12 for the De La Soulviet mashup. So I decided to drop an instrumental album called Soulviet Beats."

Once I heard the album, my neck muscles were probably strained from how much I was nodding my head in appreciation for the sound. It was def in tune with the essence of hip-hop. Tell folks out there why Soviet Union soul and jazz was incorporated into this production.

Thanks! I’m happy you like the album. Actually, I love to create music that people have never heard before. I have a large collection of soviet vinyl and rare tunes from USSR movies. Most of my beats are composed from samples that many people are not familiar with.

With all the feedback you’re getting from this release, what do you want listeners to take from it?

Well, the main stereotypes of the Soviet Union are snow and cold. Not many people know that musicians from the USSR could play warm jazz and soul music. So I want to share those good vibrations with listeners.

What can we expect from you in the near future?

On 10/20/2011 I'm going to drop TenDJiz 2010GIZ (New Miami Mixtape). It will be 20 tracks I recorded and mixed at TenDJiz Miami Studio during 2010-2011. Tracklisting consists of the artists who represent the New Miami Movement. Also I’m planning on starting a few new projects in the near future and look forward to sharing it with you shortly.

ER: Event Recap with Gentleman Jack

Greetings everyone,

Pardon me, this event's pics have been way overdue! I was live tweeting from the event though, so there goes my lackluster excuse as to why the accompanying pictures are just being posted now. I figure eye candy is eye candy -- rather expose the goodies than keep them to myself.

I've also been steadily brainstorming on the kinks for the new project in the making in accordance to this blog and have since teamed up with a great photog to get the ball rolling. So ya'll understand and still love me right? Thx :)

Event Recap

This is a national event that tours different metropolitan urban cities to expose its self-proclaimed title, art beats and lyrics. Different artists from various cities provide the arts, but the beats and the lyrics are mostly local talent.

I'm pretty sure local artists might have contributed pieces to the art exhibit that was in their city. I found the Houston stop to be very New York City influenced ie. the subway piece. But historically fitting, the Bronx bore the child that is hip-hop. Therefore, I should say the art exposition fancied exactly what was previously mentioned, the art beats and lyrics of hip-hop;

the art form that existed since tagging came into fruition. The heart beat, the boom boom bap, resonated in city emcees and breakers alike. And lastly the lyrics, the words that flew from the mouths of those who came to accept and obsess with the music that is and was hip-hop.

AR: Album Review x Bey's "4"

Greetings Fam!

So I was able to sit down with Beyoncé's latest album entitled "4" and here's my brief review.

Agree or agree to disagree, whatever's clever!

I'd like to think many artists use their music to portray their current state of mind or what they're going through or what they've been through. Kind of like a journal made through music.

If that were the case with Queen B, she's all the colors on a mood ring. Except the dark gray color, know what I'm talking about? That's because the dark grey color usually represented anger or gloom. And that's not what this album's necessarily about.

It's about falling in love, dealing through love, knowing that you're a ROCKSTAR LADY and having fun! She's head over heels in love with her man (throws up the Roc sign) and she's not afraid to share it with the world this time. I must admit that compared to her last LP, " I Am...Sasha Fierce" it seems that she might have put more time and effort into this album. Bey's said to have made her previous LP under a quick turn-around time.

"4" has great production work with Bey going through her usual vocal ranges. There's the uptempo pop songs that bring a new light to all those nights you had to dance to "Single Ladies" with "Party" featuring Andre 3000 and Yeezy. "Countdown" is up there as well as "Run The World (Girls)" with one unifying common thread. And that is she makes sure everybody knows she will continue to rep her block when she shouts out to Houston, Texas as the city that raised her.

Upon first going through the songs, it took some time to build momentum. Nonetheless, there are some standout songs to choose from such as "Love on Top" and "Rather Die Young." "Love on Top" gives off a 90's throwback hit because the production and style of this song remind me of a song that would contend for the top when superstars like Tamia were still making hits.

The prevalent theme of girl power wasn't dismissed with this album and I don't think it ever will. You can't be mad at that because Beyoncé Knowles will always know how to unite the ladies (and the gentlemen) who know how to dance like there's no tomorrow.

Only three words remain: You Go Girl.

AI: Artist Interview x 2-Twenty Music

As if the music industry isn’t competitive enough, enter underground hip-hop. Where one artist under a major record label is granted the means to make their music buzz-worthy, underground artists have to do just as much legwork, if not more, in their own capacity. Therefore in an environment not necessarily understood nor easily exposed, where hustle is the name of the game, how can camaraderie exist when everyone is out for their own shine? 2-Twenty, a local group of college students who are vouching to take the new wave of underground hip-hop to the next level, one college kid at a time, seem to have some answers.

“When we first started, we were “the other guys in the room,” says Gene. “But now, it’s like we’re starting to get love because everyone sees how hard we work. If we’re in the building, we’re going to shake everybody’s hand and we’re going to introduce ourselves to everybody and we are going to let you know that we are 2-Twenty. It’s good though. Underground’s great, I love it.”

Gene, EscalatorUp, Haize, and DJ Auditory compromise 2-Twenty. Three emcees hailing from three different states and one hometown DJ are set to take Houston’s college music scene by storm. Having been one of the opening acts for this year’s University of Houston Frontier Fiesta featuring Wale, the group’s initial beginnings were actually a touch of undergraduate fate.

In spring semester of 2010, Calvin Green, better known as Gene, was living in the dorms at University of Houston when a new roommate was displaced. Marc Haize, also known as Haize, was living there as well as an out-of-state by way of Detroit- student. Gene introduced Haize to his recorded music he once plugged while living in Japan during his military assignment with the Navy. Together they shared the connection of both living out of the country, specifically Japan, while their talents meshed to form MH and Gene.

Less than a month later, the two met Lonnie or EscalatorUp, who had to be somewhat persuaded to join them after hearing that he could rap. He agreed and since then, the name of their game consisted of a path filled with trial and error. Trial had taken place at a handful of venues etched in their memory.

“913 Prairie, as many times as we promoted it, 913 Prairie,” recalls Haize. “It’s like a little hole in the wall.”

Haize could pinpoint the exact location of venues they took up, such as Escape Lounge on 913 Prairie. Or 511 Main, which is Club Heat, and Zula Lounge, where they performed on a tiny wooden box. That event resulted in EscalatorUp literally falling off due to the mishap stage’s incapacity to handle all the hype. During that time, they incorporated DJ Auditory into the scene. This Houston native was to add a special touch to all their shows and help play their music.

The group also figured the next moves required transitioning from the club atmosphere into doing actual shows that garnered a larger crowd. That led to acquiring one of the independent stages at the 28th annual Los Magnificos Car Show. All good except for when they were about to take stage, Chris Brown simultaneously went on to perform his set. With all attention fleeting before their eyes, the setback was still a long way from their club days. Not to mention, this group has a unique optimistic outlook on the struggles they face, be it school, music life or their personal life.

Take it from their single entitled “Sail On” that came out this year. Their sampled Commodores track is a subtle and smooth backdrop to bars that discuss their current reality filled with frustrations.

“I’m kind of like sail on,” says Gene. “No matter what happens to you or what you go through, you just gotta keep it moving, you can’t just dwell on it.”

The group has since released 5 singles from their two mixtapes entitled “School Daze” and the following “Extra Credit.” Other songs include “All That” which is their take on Biggie’s hit “Juicy” with all its similar lyrical themed packaging of envisioning dreams before making it. You’ll be sure to hear some songs heavily influenced by the opposite sex. “Hear Me Out” and “Under-Rated” spit game to the ladies and include the vocal talents that Gene perfected while in high school. Another rapper/singer cliché you say? Just take a minute to appreciate the mixtapes before jumping on the bandwagon, and then one might feel indifferent.

2-Twenty’s come up story is, well, still coming up. They’ve outgrown their days of flipping their pants around like Kriss Kross and memorizing unheard Eminem lines. But they’ve yet to perfect their craft. Still, after a successful experience during their latest shows at Frontier Fiesta, which they’re actually set to perform again next year, to Miller Outdoor Theatre’s “A Night To Remember”, 2-Twenty describes what onlookers might not expect.

Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone

Singer/songwriter/pianist Avery Sunshine sat down with The M Report to discuss her recent Texas shows, the message behind her music and what's next for this rising artist.

Born and raised in Chester, Pennsylvania, Avery grew up with parents who exposed her to a variety of artists such as The Clark Sisters, Earth Wind & Fire and Aretha Franklin. Nurturing her natural inclination to soulful music, she experienced the first stages of her Gospel roots while participating as a member in the Wilmington/Chester Mass Choir.

The predisposed-manufactured-in-music-history climax to her story one would assume is actually invalid for Ms. Sunshine. That's because at first she wasn't sure her path would take on the artist role, but instead as choir director or the sort.

Since Avery took on her independent artist route, the acclaim followed. Jet Magazine named her as one of "2011's Independent Artists To Look Out For." Before that, she was very active on the scene, lending her talents for the 2008 Democratic Convention as well as performing at events during President Obama's 2009 Inauguration.

Her self-titled 2010 album release, Avery Sunshine placed on Itunes R&B/Soul charts and her track "All In My Head" peaked at #15.

Like many who have interacted with the songstress that is Avery*Sunshine, her charisma is addicting and contagious. One can't help but smile for the simple appreciation of life and the music within it.

M: How was your Dallas show?
A: The Dallas show was incredible. Before Dallas though, I was in Austin. And Austin was amazing. Actually, we were in Pflugerville. Pflugerville was wonderful, last night at the House of Blues, was incredible. The House of Blues was awesome.
M: They gave you a lot of love?
A: Oh my God, Oh my God. And it’s amazing to play in front of people who’ve never ever seen me before, knew nothing about me and they still give me the love. That is awesome.
M: That’s just a sign of your music there.
A: That’s just a blessing.

M: You’re on a Texas tour, seems like.
A: This is my last stop. I leave tomorrow morning, I wish I could stay longer.
M: Is this your first time in Texas?
A: No, it’s not my first time. I was here when I played with Tyler Perry, one of his shows. I did a play called Meet the Browns. So I was here, I think five or six years ago. I was in Beaumont. And I came to Hempstead, one of my aunts is from Hempstead.

M: Coming to Soulcial Series and bringing your music to Houston, how did that come about?
A: My agent called me and told me I had some dates. I said, really. She said I want to get you in Texas and this is a great opportunity to do it. And guess what, you’re going to be with Eric Roberson, twice. So it worked out. And of course I couldn’t say no.
M: You were working the crowd tonight.
A: Oh my God, thank you.

M: With your music, you call yourself a “healer” through the power of music. Explain more about that.
A: I feel like we hope to heal ourselves and each other when we talk about our experiences. It’s real simple, you know what I mean. And it seems like, whatever you’re dealing with, the load is a little lighter when you know that you’re not the only one dealing with it. And the only way you can know is if someone is talking about it. And I feel like it’s my duty, it’s my responsibility to talk about it. I know a lot of us are not free to do that. And it’s taken me a minute to get to a point where I can talk about divorce, and talk about, you know, foreclosure and those things. Stuff that people are going through that they don’t want to deal with. I say listen, if I’m up here on the stage telling you about it, it’s going to be okay. It’s about their empowerment. I don’t want to be too presumptuous and call myself a healer, but I will definitely say I hope to help in the healing process or aid in the healing process. Not only am I healing myself, but my sisters and brothers.
M: So what inspires you?
A: My children inspire me, God inspires me, and definitely the people who listen to my music inspire me. You know, this interview inspires me. Everything. The good food I had inspired me! I think I was in Austin, I had something, I don’t remember what it was!

M:I wanted to ask about your music video “All In My Head” which was the last song you performed tonight, what was your vision behind that video?
A: We as women, we hear one thing and we make it into something else. And I kind of wanted to poke fun and you know, kind of show it. It’s not what you think it is. We even see it and we just make it something else. So I hope people get it.
M: Oh yes! So what can we expect from you in the future?
A: Some more music and definitely to come back to Houston. I can’t wait to come back with a full show, band and singers. I can’t wait.

Taken from an interview on Good.is, here's one response from Houston Texan's running back Arian Foster that can only remind us of two words: Motivation & Inspiration.

"G: What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment to date?
AF: My whole life people would tell me I wouldn't make it to the NFL. In the 7th grade, when my teacher asked me what I wanted to do and I replied, "Play in the NFL," she told me to have a back-up plan. She didn't tell any of the kids who wanted to be doctors or lawyers to have a back-up plan. After college, I didn't get drafted, and I was also cut from my current team. Then this past year, I led the NFL in rushing, and touchdowns, while becoming a pro bowler and First team ALL pro. My biggest accomplishment is overcoming limitations."

I've always said that during my travels, my theory coincides with truth. I've learned that we are a global community and we shouldn't think otherwise. I consider myself a global citizen. My neighbors aren't limited to the lines that separate our states or the waters that separate our countries. Rather, a fine line connects us together.

Especially during the influx of the technology era we're experiencing. We've witnessed parts of Egypt intertwine by social media in order to stand for their rights. And the whole world was watching, stirring awareness and emotions to fellow neighbors all over the world.

But there are so many other stories out there that validate our fragile connectedness. I'm going to make every effort to jump start this opportunity that will only further my will to be a better global citizen.

With my pen, pad and the inspiration from fellow journalists such as Ann Curry, Marisa Mazria Katz and others who travel to lands unknown to be a voice for the voiceless, let us begin.

Well, I was going to do a snippet on this French Montana cat, but I'll leave it at Moroccan born, Bronx-based rapper with ties to Akon, Wiz Khalifa and Waka Flocka...(you get the drift) is headlining alongside Yobi.

Yobi's single with Maino "Painful War" brings one to think she's aiming for a stage that will one day see the likes of Ms. Nicki Nicki. I have much respect for the leading lady from Weezy's camp, so we'll just have to see.

But who I'm really hype to see share the stage is opening act H.I.S.D.

Many artists have graced the SOB steps and I've been fortunate to witness the beginning of greatness for some of them. Meaning to say, either you already had a reputation or you were earning yours. With the understanding of what HOT 97 comprehends for talent, there's something out there waiting to be exposed. The New York streets will either take it or leave it, ready to be fed what SOB serves on any given night.

With what this group offers to the plate, get your fork and spoons ready NEW YAAAAHHKK AHHHHHH!!

Peace UV Mine Presents: An Intimate Musical Journey with Krystal Hardwick

Houston- March 3, 2011

Underneath the persona that is known to the masses as the independent hip-hop group H.I.S.D, exists a platform that aims to expose progressive artistry in a variety of mediums. Peace UV Mine Entertainment, pronounced “peace of mine,” has just about 14 artists underneath their management. One might suggest calling their efforts a Houston-bred grassroots artist label with a dynamic roster of emcees, poets, vocalists and visual artists.

Herein lies Krystal Hardwick, a 24-year old model/singer/songwriter hailing from Katy, Texas. Hardwick’s music speaks for itself and breaks the boundaries of one-dimensional R&B sounds from the south. One artist who has successfully captivated a following with her unique sound is Janelle Monáe, who hails from Kansas City. Nonetheless, Hardwick and Peace UV Mine Entertainment set forth a night dedicated to becoming familiar with her artistic forte that is sultry and electro-acoustic melodies.

The event took place at Check Other Outfitters, an urban fashion boutique, with sounds provided by H.I.S.D’s own Flash Gordon Parks on the 1s and 2s. The night silently screamed hip-hop from the store dripped in graffiti-like art as the backdrop to the shoes, to the pages of poetry inside Totems to Hip-Hop on display in the small lounge area. All that was missing was Hardwick’s album, “The Tale of Two Fish” to play through the speakers.

Interestingly enough, the production work on her album was mainly exported from European countries such as Turkey, Italy, Switzerland and London. The final mastering was done by King G of H.I.S.D, therefore re-aligning the sound back with its Houston roots. But the final product was far from anything I’ve heard coming from these neck of the woods. For any R&B artist to reach a crowd of acceptance, I believe versatility and talent must intercede each other to make room for growth. If that’s the case, Hardwick set a solid foundation.

“The Tale of Two Fish,” will be released on both her personal website and her labels on March 22 through the option of a digital download or mailed CD.

What's going on folks!

Happy New Years to all. Although I'm mad late on that note, I'd rather extend the greeting now that I'm signed on again.

I'm here to share my current Fashion Fetish: Nail Fetish

I'm currently typing with the the cutest new color shade on the OPI block.
There have been many posts that I've read before that show the writer's interest in the glitter nail polish trend. The thing about this trend is that you don't want it to come off cheap as if you bought the glitter top coat at the 99 cent store. Don't get me wrong, I don't knock the 99 cent store when there are some items that ladies could pull off if done properly. For example, a top coat or a base polish sold there.

Nonetheless, this OPI collection has a variety of fantastic colors to choose from. Ranging from blue, green and black hues. I chose the green shade and absolutely love it! It doesn't look tacky at all. By the way, the green shade is called "Glow Up Already" which I thought was too cute.

My sister tried the black shade and for some reason the glitter didn't come off as flashy as mine.

Try it next time you're at the salon or if you buy it. I'd love to hear your feedback.

After a couple of days from wear, the nail polish chipped. I suggest getting it done at the salon and to keep your nails on point, buy the bottle to adjust the chipping.

I read that today and boy was today WAR! RAWR!

I was reluctant to give into these thoughts/feelings in my mind because, frankly, I have been just on my own little cloud since I came back from my trip.
I needed something to happen to me for me to come back to earth. A little humbling. And thank God for that. There was this sort of built up anger and resentment and I was completely trying to be above it all.

Hearing about the smoothness of other folk's day made me realize the downfall mine was heading towards. And my mother said that it was simply about the simple things. I heard her out and knew she was right. We all go through our ups and our downs and there is no day that we shouldn't be wrapped in love. The blessing of the day is abundant and we just have to reach for it.

And so I know it can be hard sometimes.

But I opened up my wonderful book my mentor, Mr. Rideout gave me years and years ago, and it just hit me like BAM.

Good things to remember from this lesson/ my day of healing:

1) Sometimes you have to confront things to make them better. But use wisdom.
2)Stay focused
3) Remain in love

This post is actually dedicated to those not afraid of the path less chosen. I have trouble remembering what I sought out with such an endeavor almost 5 years ago as I embarked upon this beautiful disaster called NYC that I had fallen in love with years ago. But thanks to those special folks who have blessed me with their presence and priceless words (cough Stefhunny & my "coach" Mr. Rideout, you two are prime examples of such a title) I have re-opened my own personal "job well done" sticker, my personal "happy face on my first spelling bee" type of pat on the back.

As thoughts buzz in my head as fast as the sweet flower's companion, I have put up a white flag. Yet, not in defeat, my friends. A white flag of victory, of Totus Tuus, of total surrender, to a destiny unknown but requiring a first step. A leap of faith one might say. Now logically, this may upset some, but I do not stand discouraged, not at all. I actually find this to be a characteristic of what I stand for, of strength and integrity, something I have owned as mine during this journey here.

I find this to possibly tug me deep in the left and right ventricle of my central pumping organ. And I believe I will battle it from time to time because I know myself. I know I can be sensitive and prone to my emotions, at times digging deeper than necessary. That's why I made sure to put my Nikes on for this race. hehe.

This might come across as out of whack or confusing, and I apologize in advance.
Just bear with me on quest for gaining my inner peace and direction.

Yes, with quite a roar in the sound waves that Manny Pacquiao has done...

what more than to extend more Filipino love than to shout out another contender who does their thing on the basis outside of the norm.

We're talking musically.

That's where the artist/songwriter Passion comes to play. I'm pretty sure you've heard his name or heard his songs if you're into the music scene via Texas and all the colleges and show's he's performed (Goodphil, Extravaganza, etc. )

Anywhoo, he definitely deserves more credit than due. He's worked with Slim of 112 and has even wrote some songs for him on Slim's last album in 2008.

I would stay tuned to his music, boy's got talent and see what other credentials he's stirring up. My bet? He's working his way into superstardom, with talent that is worth the time.

I'm irked by the escalating youth violence in the streets. This is the future and we need to think two steps ahead before defiance becomes a winner in their mentality.

Chicago's south side isn't the only metropolitan town facing the rising statistics. We need to stand up for the future, change the foundation, where the basic fundamental train of thought is skewed by means of a lack in love and support.

I believe in the ability for change. With Big Brothers/Big Sisters, having someone believe in a young mind's capability is worth more than what any sneaker, chain, clothing brand can offer.

So as you check 'em out, sidenote: I used to love watching Sister Sister when Roger would come through. Roger aka MH, who is a pimp in all his videos! What is this kid making out hard in the video ?? Crazy. I loved Romeo too, but I realize he just looks sexy and his voice is mediocre. It's alright, LDB just turns and barely picks up the mic. STILL LOVED THIS GROUP FOR SURE.

Hey guys! Sorry for the lagging update! Been way overdue, but it's been a bit crazy on my end. But I would never forget about updating ya'll on what's happening!

Past weekends ago was the Inside A Change Afterparty.

There was a private screening at the Indie Movie Theater earlier that day, with giveaways such as the sick mixtape with Slaughterhouse and more, and also included Mend, a movie that Rik Cordero directed.

With a talented cast and an undeniably talented director whose directed most of the best hip-hop videos, the film is definitely worthy of review. Yet, it's waiting distribution talks. SO STAY TUNED AND CATCH IT AT A THEATER NEAR YOU.

MILEAGE- going for a run always clears the mind and does a body good.

It was confirmed today of the deal, after months of a highly anticipated and talked about topic of Shaquille O' Neal trading from the Phoenix Suns to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

B-ball heads and men in general who kept up with the situation might find it quite entertaining to see him alongside the other NBA great, Lebron James. Looks like revenge never tasted sweeter for Mr. Shaq, although he initially congratulated Kobe Bryant via twitter of his response to the Laker's 2009 NBA Championship.

From people's responses to my question, I'm getting he's too old, some can't wait, some aren't sure.

As I was told that, I couldn't help but giggle and smile, unnerved by the compliment. Not that I'm not grateful, but for someone to recognize the force I possess, I can only do what I do best, which is let my grin reach ear to ear.

That was exactly what I had to hear on the day when I recognized the passion within me.

To write.
Unceassingly.
Continuously.

My soul spoke to me today, you know those gut feelings that you always hear? It's like test day in Algebra class, when you choose B, knowing something inside you says choose A, but you don't. Then you come to find that A was the correct answer.

It said to me, "Something ain't right, you're taking away the piece of you that exists for a reason if you choose to step away from it all."

I felt like a dog who lost its leash. You can't takw away my identity.
It's a wrap. Call it destiny, but I'd take the struggle if it leads to fullfillment rather than to choose the latter. The juice is worth the squeeze and yet it never tasted so sweet.
I'm driven, I'm determined. I'm naive, I'll make mistakes, but I'm learning.

And I have the support system to back me up. The day I dawned my red and black gown at graduation, I learned to never underestimate myself.

I doubted what I can do. Never again.

I'll let my words speak for me, and day by day, become a better journalist.

a humble awakening

This is my public service observance.

I'm handling business in the Jamaica, Queens area and I can't help but notice the influx of young teens, I'm talking about 13 + up, who are so open with sexual attraction and sex in general. Condoms are as entertaining as basketball cards and the "coolest" person has the most condoms in their backpack. And the kid who would seem to have his head on straight, or with an inch of right in his head, from my senses, is the kid whom everyone is teasing doesn't get enough RUMP!

What's wrong with this picture guys? Is there nothing sacred anymore? At such an influential and misunderstood stage, these people need someone to look up to, need someone to tell them that it's alright to focus on getting ahead instead of keeping up with just getting head.

My mom wasn't lying when she told me this was the age of kids whom she believes need the most guidance. I respect what she does with the kids back home and educating them on the body.

What does it say when instead of after-school programs, kids are going in groups to get tested? No more lessons in computer science, but lessons in how to raise a child when they're still a child. The severity of this problem mustn't be ignored. The innocence is lost and these kids just need a helping hand, a friend, who will encourage them on the path they are destined be, which is the future.

When the glimpse of the playground gets replaced with the glimpse of that girl's new hips, nice lips, where have we gone wrong?

There was a bar and lots of models in a variety of "forms" to say the least to welcome the shoppers. And there was a discount on all purchases that day. I sure wish Topshop's opening day in Soho could have hooked it up like that!

Nonetheless, I would rock the N.E.R.D tees, the Katy Perrys and Estelle shirts. Try whatever floats YOUR boat. And remember ROCK with a cause, ya dig!

S7ven Fashion Show

What's up everybody!
Let's check out the latest noteworthy college fashion show.

Hosted by Toccara of America's Next Top Model @ St. John's University was the S7ven Fashion Show which showcased the seven deadly sins in different designs, each by a different designer.
Portions of the proceeds went to Designers Against Aids. Their mindset is to:

raise aids awareness

As the night began, I must say, there was great looks on every designer's part. Very refreshing to see.

Beyonce's songs were in the air and so was classic, sleek pieces such as mini-dresses and bubble mini-dresses. There was also classy business suits, and asymmetrical dresses that glittered.
PRINTS !
The details were noteworthy of mentioning. Black full skirts with lace gloves. Very intricate details.

There was also a dance intro to some of the designer lines. Envy had male dancers decked in khaki's with green polos looking like they came out of a Ralph Lauren ad.

And again, all the audience had to hear was the girl alma-mater "Diva" and at that note entered 4 tiered multi-colored dresses, belted 2 tone dresses with pink and black hues and more. I absolutely loved the two toned heels that accompanied some of the looks.

For the last portion, was an all men's line (with some of the designers being students @ St. John's)
Their line, Things Allure had colored pants (SPRING/SUMMER trends anyone!!!)
+ cargo pants, cargo shorts
+ suspenders
Very business-like with a Benjamin Bixby feel.

I highly dislike men feet, but as the men strutted barefoot, it wasn't that bad!
Crisp, clean, watch out!

Tocarra lighted up the night with her sense of humor. She's currently prepping for the 2009 "Vagina Monologues" tour as part of an all-star cast

Here, I caught up with the main designer from House of Dumarsh with his well executed pieces, that fit his models very well! Very catchy. You can find his designs at HouseofDumash.com
I asked about his "envy" line for the show.

"Some are greedy for money, some are greedy for fame, so I started off with black and white, and then I went to cocktail dresses to evening gown, so in a sense, I have a mixture of everybody. It's also some spring dresses, don't care who you are, there was something for you, not matter what you're greedy for, there's something for you."

And as far as his spring line:

"This season we're doing a lot of cocktail dresses, because of how the economy is going, people are looking to save, so a great cocktail dress you can use from a wedding to a party to a funeral to a graduation, it's good to go. So I'm thinking of the economy this season."

It's been a minute since I've heard anything pertaining to the lovely twins. Pitbull, well he's heard in every scene where alcohol is allowed, scratch that, I'm sure he's getting airwaves at the teen parties. Who can blame him? The Miami party scene will never reach a grave. Not when hot mami's get it poppin' from time to time.

Special guest? Why yes, I mean YAYUUUHHHHHHHHHH. OK K K !!! Lil' Jon himself was in the building, looking like... well himself. Same dark shades + long dreads just ready to get it KRUNK!!!

I do have word on my latest meet and greet with one of the illest producers, 9th Wonder, and lyrical artist on the rise, SkyZoo.

I must say, they are down to earth people. 9th reminds me of my brother and his friends back home in Texas.

Projects on the rise?
Yes, SkyZoo is teaming up with Jamla records (9th's latest label) to release his 2nd album, The Salvation.

SkyZoo told me that it will be "real music" for those who know him. And for those who don't know him and want to know the artist and what he's about, will get a feel for that on this album. Other producers on his album include Pete Rock, Best Kept Secret, and of course 9th himself.

"The difference now is what I’m trying to do, I’m trying to put party and the message together." -9th Wonder

That's right ladies and gents. We're talking about the burger line between 50 "Fiddy" Cent + Rick Ross + Fat Joe.

Before we get to that, I'd just like to say this site is definitely under construction! I got my maino ThirdCultureKid helping me out on the project. Shout out to mottti!

Moving right along, So after an upcoming interview that I believe will be in an upcoming The Source issue between FJ himself and M.C., we can clearly say that the biggest boss Rick Ross & FJ & DJ Khaled are all homies of deep loyalty. Let's get to the juicy stuff.

FJ: "You telling me what it looks like, I'm telling you what it is" (He's setting the record straight)
" I don't accept responsibility for this beef at all" (FJ to the beef with 50 & Ross)

Now FJ & 50 have been battling it out lyrically for a while now, but he nowhere claims Ross to jump in and tag team. No Nacho Libre tactics whatsoever. He clearly states it was Ross's own fight.

FJ puts a lot of people into the game, not to mention LV who produced most of Hov's last album American Gangster, including one of my favorites, "Roc Boys" Now that, I can respect.
